Natural Phenomena!

Sun Dog!!

     What is a sundogs ?

A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion) is a relatively common atmospheric optical phenomenon associated with the reflection/refraction of sunlight by the numerous small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds.

     How are sundogs formed ?

The formation of Sundogs is more frequent when the Sun is placed low on the horizon, especially during Sunrise or Sunset. In normal conditions, Sundogs are positioned at a distance of 22 degrees away from the Sun and this is the closest distance. It can be more but never less than this. When the separation is ideal and Sun is at the horizon, Sundogs appear. Slowly when the Sun moves to higher altitude of 45 degrees Sundogs appear at a greater distance from the Sun. And when the Sun goes beyond 61 degrees altitude, they disappear totally or appear very blurred.
